My name is Tanya Mann. My husband, Stephen, and I came to the Vine in 2014 and fell in love with the pub and the village.
I have had over twenty years’ experience in the international wine industry and have many qualifications in wines and spirits. Steve was a restaurant manager and chef for some time and has also been director of several large companies.
We have a team of over twenty, helping to make the Vine a destination pub of choice in this lovely corner of England.
The bar is a traditional, comfortable, well stocked room at the front of the inn. Behind it is the Brown Room, our spacious dining room, which is perfect for parties and functions as well as evening and lunchtime meals. Outside is a pretty courtyard with exotic plants, decorative features and comfortable furnishings where people love to drink on summer evenings. Beyond the car parking area is a large garden within ancient walls where you’ll find a bouncy castle every Sunday. Relax here while your children play in safety. It’s here, too, that we hold our ever-popular annual beer festival and other charity events.
I have enjoyed bringing my expertise in wines to our customers. We thought long and hard about our wine list and were rewarded when it received a top award from Harper’s, the most prestigious magazine of the wine trade (a top three UK place in “the best drinks offer in a pub” category, beating off more than a thousand other establishments). To extend the original list, I have visited vineyards in USA, Italy, Austria, Georgia and elsewhere to select the very best that organic boutique wineries have to offer. Thank you to our lovely customers who have been wise enough to open up their wine horizons and find their favourites from our list.
As for beers and ales, we have awards from Guinness and from Cask Marques. Guest ales are changed weekly.
Our extended gin menu has earned a reputation. We add new products every fortnight, with a range of tonics to match. Last year we held a very successful festival of 30 gins. This summer – July 6th -will see our first One Hundred Gin Festival.
The restaurant is a handsome room, where head chef Stephen and his team will serve you food described as “British with a twist”. Our Asian chef adds a few twists of his own, too. In fact, Steve’s recipes were recently included in a gastronomic book, ‘Essex Feast’, featuring recipes from some of Essex’s best-loved chefs.
Lunch is served every day, and evening menus change every month. Very popular is our signature Taster Menu evening, the last Saturday of every month, where you will find inspired dishes you are unlikely to have tried elsewhere.
And don’t forget, we have a simple menu of good quality traditional pub food to take away – 6 until 9 pm every night. The fish and chips, pies and curries are always popular.
Meats are supplied by Danny Smith, whose shop is within yards of our front door. Our signature steaks and in-house burgers are always popular. Fish, such as sea bass and scallops, is freshly supplied by a Colchester company, while our veg-man sets out for London at 4am each day. You can’t get fresher than that!
At the moment we are developing a Vegan menu and would welcome help with suggestions.
We love our village and our villagers and want to see them happy. We give back to the community via contributions to local charities and by originating events to raise money. Best of all, we love to see folk relax and enjoy themselves with good food, drink and conversation.
